Annie Randall White’s book is one of many popular etiquette manuals published during the Progressive Era that expounds on the appropriate behavior for middle-class and upper-class men, women, and children “in public, social, and private life, at home and abroad.” The content of the manual is representative of the time, in that its prescriptive affirms women’s place in the home and men’s role in the public sphere.
