Conclusion
Women, throughout history, have faced restrictions on their looks and actions, especially when it came to cosmetics. During the turn of the century, makeup gained acceptance and popularity, as women defined for themselves new roles in modern society.
However, danger persists. Cosmetics of the past were frequently unregulated and therefore, extremely dangerous; today, the makeup industry is still the FDA’s least regulated industry. In order for a cosmetic to enter the market, it must be clearly labeled; however, it does not need to be tested for safety by the FDA.[1] Although most women use makeup everyday, few are aware of the history behind the products they are using or the potential risks to which they are exposing themselves.
Since its commercialization, makeup has empowered women and continues to do so today. By putting makeup within its historical context, women can fully realize its inspiring history and become part of its tradition of strong, liberated women.
