Early Twentieth Century
As the 20th century progressed, women gained more rights. Fueled by World War I and the women’s suffrage movement, women began to expand their influence on the beauty standards to which they were held. They began openly wearing makeup while out in public and took an interest in their health, as well as their beauty. As makeup became commercialized, entrepreneurs such as Max Factor and Elizabeth Arden rose to prominence in the industry.
